Coit & Cambridge Park Improvements
OCBA and the City of Grand Rapids Parks Department facilitated two listening sessions with stakeholder groups for each park, and as a result, the improvement plans are a direct reflection of resident’s wants and needs.
Coit Park’s improvements include development of a central community space for informal gatherings and small neighborhood events. A failing retaining wall was removed, and the site regraded to create an amphitheater-like space and save mature evergreen trees above the wall. A restroom building was replaced with a portable restroom to provide needed facilities while minimizing costs and opportunities for inappropriate behavior in the park.
Cambridge Park’s neighbors expressed little interest in changes or additions to the park. Additional shade trees and a looped path are the primary improvements proposed for this quiet, little-known neighborhood park. While many ideas were proposed to formalize the impromptu dog park use that occurs, the city and design team deferred to the stakeholder’s wishes.
