Millennium Park

Millennium-4.jpeg

The edge of the Grand River in the cities of Grand Rapids, Walker, Wyoming and Grandville, on land previously mined for gravel, sand and gypsum.

It connects Kent County’s Johnson Park to the John Ball Park and Zoo, provides access to the 15-mile Kent Trails, and preserves over 10 miles of river frontage.

The Kent County Parks Department retained O’Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates, Inc. (OCBA) to help reclaim 1,500 acres of industrial land and create an urban greenway that, when complete, will be one of the nation’s largest urban parks.

OCBA led the site design team through the preliminary design, construction documents, bidding and construction administration phases for development of the Recreation Core at Millennium Park.  Upon completion of the Recreation Core project, the Kent County Parks Department continued their collaboration with OCBA to design and construct a Spray Park and several phases of trail development throughout the park.

The Recreation Core project included drives and parking, an entry plaza and beach house, rest room building, picnic shelters, basketball court, playground, beach area, boat launch and boat house, paved walks and overlooks, and boardwalks, fishing piers, trails and overlooks.  The Spray Park encompasses over 6,500 square feet and offers almost 30 different pieces of spray equipment for visitors to enjoy.

MHB Paradigm Design, Inc. provided architectural services for the buildings; Holland Engineering provided final road and parking layout and grading, storm water management, utility layout and permitting services; and Byce Associates, Inc. provided electrical engineering services for the Recreation Core and Splash Park projects.
