Bronson Methodist Hospital
O’Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates, Inc. (OCBA) was retained in 1994 by Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson & Abbott (SBRA) architects for the new multi-functional medical campus to provide landscape site design services. Design and construction documents were completed by OCBA in 1997 for multiple phases of construction in collaboration with SBRA and under the direction of Bronson Methodist Hospital.
OCBA was responsible for design and coordination of vehicular circulation, parking, walks, plazas, grading, storm water management, landscaping, and irrigation. In addition, OCBA developed a final design and worked with the construction manager to implement an atrium garden space inside the building. Overall construction costs for the project were $210 million
After completion of the South Campus, OCBA continued to work with Bronson Healthcare Group to master plan, redevelop and improve several adjacent parcels so that the quality and character of all of Bronson’s facilities are consistent.
The North Pavilion project at Bronson encompassed the renovation of an existing inpatient tower to expand inpatient facilities by 40%. OCBA was once again retained by the hospital to design the site improvements associated with the North Pavilion renovation and expansion. OCBA developed preliminary concepts so that a project budget could be established, then completed construction documents as a subconsultant to Diekema Hamann Architects. One of the project’s greatest challenges included the development of an outdoor patio space over an existing basement. Obtaining positive drainage over the relatively flat space and incorporating materials that would meet the limitations of the existing structure required extensive creativity and coordination among the design and client team. The project cost totaled $8 million.
OCBA was also part of the multidisciplinary design team retained by Bronson to complete the Upjohn Building renovation. Bronson was committed to preserving the integrity of the building, which was designed by architect Albert Kahn.
OCBA worked closely with Bronson to develop site design concepts that would both compliment and respect the building that served as The Upjohn Company’s global headquarters from 1936 – 1961. A pedestrian plaza that had served as the building’s connection to downtown Kalamazoo was converted to vehicular drop off and visitor parking, however the original materials and overall character of the space were echoed in the updated design. Marble bench slabs and large flowerpots that were part of the original plaza were reused, and many of the existing plant materials were maintained and augmented with new plantings.
OCBA has continued to assist Bronson with the development of improvements in and around the downtown campus. In addition, OCBA was recently selected by Bronson to be part of the multi-disciplinary team that is designing a new Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility.
