Bates Alley

Home to numerous restaurants and bars fronting on Michigan Avenue and adjacent to two large public parking lots, Bates Alley was an asphalt paved back alley used for deliveries and parking by business owners.

The Downtown Partnership saw the opportunity to create a lively pedestrian area with outdoor seating, overhead lighting, and a brightly painted walkway that would serve as the businesses’ second front entrance and not be open to vehicular traffic.

OCBA was retained to develop a plan that identified simple, inexpensive options and alternatives for lighting, paving, and dumpster relocation and screening so that short-term improvements could be implemented. The Downtown Kalamazoo Partnership worked directly with a project manager to implement the improvements once the funding was in place.
