Project Description

Client

Kelly Clark, Executive Director, Kalamazoo County Land Bank

Riverview Launch is envisioned as a “bridge from urban to natural” and a place that uses the tenets of place making to draw the community. OCBA is part of the team that includes INFORM Architecture, Glas Associates, and the Kalamazoo County Land Bank working together to create easy and inviting access to the site, river and Kalamazoo River Valley Trail (KRVT); rental gathering/celebration space; space for future food vendor sales; garden/landscape/ play/performance areas; and opportunities to get re-acquainted with natural environment. It is intended to serve as an educational tool and demonstration model on sustainable practices and leadership. Healthy ecosystems, water quality, and resource management will be emphasized with a series of techniques, including:

  • On-site use of native plants in the landscape
  • Providing more habitats for bees and butterflies
  • Local food production awareness through community gardens/food prep demos
  • On-site storm water management
  • Reuse of existing buildings and reclaimed and recycled building materials
  • Siting for best use of natural elements/sunlight/views
  • Reduction/recycling of waste: sewer, paper, water, trash

OCBA facilitated an initial visioning process, was responsible for development of the preliminary site master plan, and continues to provide professional consulting on an as-needed basis. We recently completed the final landscape and site design that is now under construction.
