LifeChurch LV, Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania

O’Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates, Inc. (OCBA) was retained to develop a master plan for a new resident camp and year-‘round retreat facility for the Pocono Pines branch of Lifechurch LV.  After two successful summers of providing day camp for children from the area, Lifechurch determined the need to expand the camp offerings to include weekly resident camp, and retreat facilities for both church members and the local community.

The day camp currently functions out of the lower level of the existing church building, and has use of the playground and courts that are adjacent, as well as several wooded acres with hiking trails.  When a large tract of land across the road became available, the church leadership wanted to test the feasibility of developing facilities that would serve their needs.  OCBA conducted a two-day charrette with the church leaders to explore how multi-purpose dining/meeting/sleeping, and recreation/activity buildings would fit on the site along with cabin villages and other amenities.

One of the challenges of developing the plan was designing and locating the buildings so that they could be used by both day and resident campers while maintaining separation between them.  In addition, year-‘round access to the larger buildings in the rigorous Poconos climate had to be carefully planned to encourage use of the facilities outside of the summer camp season.
